This talk examines fairy tales in their broader cultural context. It analyzes different versions of canonical fairy tales (e.g. Hansel and Gretel), explores how these stories evolved as they were appropriated by a literary culture and delineates their influence to the present day. To what degree do fairy tales raise timeless and universal issues and to what extent are they specific to a certain time and place? Who first „invented“ Snow White and why is the story constantly re-scripted? Are fairy tales still relevant today and in what form are they still present?
