SUMMARY:Democracy Book Group: "Man-Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Vio
 lent Extremism"
DESCRIPTION:Join this in-person-book-group to discuss Cynthia Miller-Idriss
' book Man Up – The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism. Al
so\, don't miss the event Man Up – The New Misogyny &amp\; the Rise of
Violent Extremism where Miller-Idriss will come to Amerikahaus on Thursda
 y\, March 19\, 2026\, at 7 p.m.\n\nWhat two things do most mass shooters\,
terrorists\, or violent extremists have in common? Most of us know the fi
rst: they are almost always men or boys. But the second? They are almost a
lways virulent misogynists\, homophobes\, or transphobes—even if they ar
e also motivated by racism\, antisemitism\, or xenophobia. The antigovernm
ent militiamen charged with plotting to kidnap and execute Michigan govern
or Gretchen Whitmer used language saturated with misogyny\, with one telli
ng an FBI informant\, “Just grab the bitch.” The men who killed scores
at Virginia Tech\, the Pulse nightclub\, and a Maryland newsroom all had
prior reports of stalking\, domestic violence\, or harassment of women. An
d in dozens of other incidents—from North America to Norway to New Zeala
nd—an increasing number of misogynist incel (involuntary celibate) and m
ale supremacist attackers have explicitly targeted and killed women\, blam
ing feminism or sexual frustration with women as motivation for their atta
cks.\n\nYet\, despite all evidence\, the bright red thread of misogyny run
ning through these attacks is barely acknowledged by the media or even exp
erts – and this failing leaves us powerless to stop the violence. In Man
Up\, Cynthia Miller-Idriss\, a leading expert on extremism\, addresses th
is crucial oversight head-on\, revealing how an epidemic of misogyny – b
oth online and off – and a patriarchal backlash are driving an exponenti
al rise in mass and far-right violence. She also offers essential strategi
es that all of us – including parents\, teachers\, and counselors – ca
n use to fight the rising tide of violence\, beginning with recognizing th
e misogyny that pervades our everyday lives.\n\nRegistration: Admission is
free. No registration is necessary.\n\nOrganizers: A part of the Munich
Dialogues on Democracy Speakers Series\, a cooperation between The Yale
Club of Germany e.V. (Munich Chapter) and the Amerikahaus - Bavarian Cen
 ter for Transatlantic Relations.
