This novel by contemporary author T.C. Boyle investigates the relationship between humans and their environment and is described by some as an “eco-thriller.” When the protagonist, Cat, loses her newly acquired pet, she sets off a series of events that seem to only get more outrageous as the story progresses. The story pits materialism in American society against the dire straits of environmental disasters such as mass extinction, hurricanes, and extreme weather events. Despite these drastic situations and warnings, the story brings humor into the mix, making for an easily discussable piece of climate fiction.
