A contemporary immigrant tale with ample social commentary, Americanah follows the adult lives of Ifemelu and Obinze, who emigrate from a militant Nigeria to the USA and England. Ifemelu arrives in the U.S. and struggles with the concept of Blackness and being Black in America versus being Black in Africa. Obinze, who would have liked to join Ifemelu in the U.S., cannot do so due to the restrictive immigration policies in place after 9/11 in the U.S. Instead, he confronts a life as an undocumented person in London, England. After 15 years, they reunited in a newly democratic Nigeria, where they have the chance to rediscover the other and share their experiences as immigrants in two very different situations.
