What would it be like to experience Armageddon and live to tell the tale? The narrator of Cat’s Cradle, journalist and writer John, gives us a humorful, sarcastic telling of just that. As part of his research for a book, John contacts physicist Newt Hoenikker, which sets off a series of increasingly alarming discoveries about a potentially world-ending substance, “ice-nine.” When a dictator catches wind of the discovery, the threat of the end of the world becomes reality. This novel plays with many of the fears during the Cuban Missile Crisis and in general the threat of mutual destruction during the Cold War. Concepts of free will, man versus technology, and religious fanaticism are major themes in this novel.
