The 1936 novel Nightwood is considered a landmark piece of feminist and lesbian literature. Written in the literary epoch between the two world wars, it takes places in the major European cities of Berlin, Vienna, and Paris. The story intertwines the lives of five main characters: a Jewish, self-proclaimed son a baron; his American wife who has affairs with two women; and a transvestite and gynecologist. Their lives and conflicts swirl into one dramatic and sordid tale of questioning the boundaries between class, religion and sexuality.
