This month, the Amerikahaus Literary Circle discusses The Sorrows of an American by Siri Hustvedt.
This postmodern novel uncovers secrets of the lives of four generations of the fictional, Norwegian-American Davidsen family. After discovering a cryptic note among their deceased father’s papers, Erik and Inga begin to uncover their father’s hidden hardships and experiences throughout important milestones of U.S. history, like the Great Depression and World War 2. The story also gives us insight into Erik’s and Inga’s lives and their own struggles, which all factor into larger questions of how personal identity is formed and reflected in personal history.
